How to Get Started on Undergraduate Research

Introduction/Overview
Starting undergraduate research can seem daunting and overly professional to many students, making it difficult for them to know where to begin. To address this challenge, I created a motion graphic video that guides students through the process in a simple and accessible way.

Step-by-Step Workflow
1. Identifying Student Needs
I recognized that many students feel lost when it comes to starting research, so I decided to develop a motion graphic video titled "How to Get Started on Undergraduate Research."
2. Research & Planning
I gathered information by understanding the needs of students and the requirements of the office. This involved researching the process, meeting with the office managers, and outlining a plan for the project.
3. Concept Development
I created a step-by-step guide, beginning with drafting a script that clearly and concisely explained the process. This included breaking down complex steps into easy-to-understand segments.
4. Script Feedback
I sought feedback on the script from colleagues and office managers to ensure accuracy and clarity, refining the content based on their input.
5. Voiceover Recording
After finalizing the script, I recorded the voiceover, ensuring that the tone was friendly and approachable, matching the needs of the target audience.
6. Creation
I used Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects to create the animation. This involved designing graphics, animating sequences, and syncing them with the voiceover to produce an engaging and informative video.
7. Feedback & Revisions
After creating the initial version, I gathered feedback from the office, making revisions to improve clarity, pacing, and visual appeal.
8. Final Delivery
The final video was published on the officeโ€™s website and YouTube channel, providing students with an easy-to-follow guide for applying to undergraduate research opportunities.

Challenges & Solutions
Creating the graphics took longer than anticipated, especially with the need to make the steps appear simple and approachable. The complexity of different programs and exceptions made scripting and storytelling challenging. To overcome this, I dedicated extra time to script development and sought input from others to ensure the video was both accurate and easy to understand.
